A Battle Where Parents Must Stand Aside

In the world of Odyssey of the Mind (OM), there is one golden rule that every adult must respect: "No Outside Assistance."

Since this team was formed in the fall of 2025, these students have navigated every step on their own. They have scripted their own stories, engineered their own mechanisms, and crafted their own costumes from scratch. As parents, we’ve watched them build their dreams—literally—out of cardboard and determination.

A Journey Through Uncertainty

The road has been anything but smooth. With limited after-school hours and a major winter freeze that cancelled our weekend home meetings, progress often felt invisible to us.

As parents, our role was reduced to being "the drivers." We watched from the sidelines as they carried mysterious cardboard structures and hand-taped costumes into practice, our heads tilted in confusion. We felt the constant urge to step in—"It would be sturdier if you did this," or "Let me help you fix that"—but the rules demanded our silence. Our only contribution was the quiet support of a car ride and the patience to let them fail, learn, and grow on their own.

The Spark of Resilience: From 6th to 2nd

At the Regional Tournament, the team faced a moment of truth. They finished in 6th place—the very last spot to qualify for the State level. Initially, the kids were just filled with pure joy and relief; they truly thought their journey had ended there. They knew they hadn't yet shown their full potential, and being given this "miraculous" second chance was exactly the spark they needed to ignite their competitive spirit.

The transformation between Regionals and State was profound. They went back to the drawing board, refined every cardboard joint, and polished every line of their performance. Their hard work paid off spectacularly at the State Tournament, where they claimed 2nd Place and earned their ticket to the World Finals.

Next Stop: The World Stage in Iowa

This May, teams from across the United States and dozens of countries will descend upon Iowa for the World Finals. It is a stage where the brightest, most creative young minds come together to showcase their solutions to the world’s most complex problems.

From those cold, cancelled practices to the long drives to tournaments, these students from Suwanee Elementary have proven that they have the grit to compete on a global level.

[Appendix: What is Odyssey of the Mind?]

For those new to the program, Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving competition that has empowered students since 1978.

• What they do: Teams choose one of five competitive problems (ranging from building mechanical devices to interpreting classics) and present their original solution in an 8-minute performance.

• The "No Help" Rule: Everything—the ideas, the construction, the scripts—must be 100% student-led. Adults cannot suggest ideas or help with repairs.

• The Goal: It’s not just about finding the "right" answer; it’s about finding the most creative and unique one.

Today, thousands of teams from over 25 countries —including elite representatives from Japan— participate in what is often called the "Olympics of the Mind."

扉を開いた子供たちへ：世界へ挑む「Odyssey of the Mind」Suwanee Elementary チームの軌跡

親が入る隙のない、孤独で自由な戦い

「Odyssey of the Mind (OM)」には、大人が絶対に破ってはならない鉄のルールがあります。それは**「Outside Assistance（外部援助）の禁止」**。

2025年秋にチームが結成されてから今日まで、子供たちは自分たちの力だけで、ゼロから物語を紡ぎ、仕掛けを作り、衣装を組み上げてきました。

順風満帆とは程遠い、手探りの日々

放課後の限られた時間。週末に自宅に集まって行う予定だった集中ミーティングは、不運にも大寒波の影響でキャンセルに。 「進んでいるのか、止まっているのか」 外で見守る私たち親には、彼らの現在地さえわかりませんでした。

私たちができるのは、ただ車を出し、練習場所まで送迎することだけ。 時々、子供たちが自宅へ持ち帰ってくる「段ボールの構造物」や「切り貼りされた衣装のようなもの」を見ては、大きく首を傾げる……。 「あそこをこうすればいいのに」「もっと頑丈に作れるはず」 喉まで出かかるアドバイスを必死に飲み込み、彼らの試行錯誤をただ見守る日々は、ある意味で子供たち以上に、親にとっての忍耐の旅でもありました。

「6位」からの再点火

迎えたRegional（地区大会）。 結果は、ギリギリ滑り込みの「6位入賞」。 会場で自分たちの力を出し切れなかったと、不甲斐なさを噛みしめる子供たちの表情。泣き言こそ言いませんでしたが、その静かな悔しさが、彼らの導火線に火をつけました。

「このままでは終われない」

そこからの彼らは、別人のようでした。自分たちの弱さと向き合い、段ボールひとつ、セリフひとつを極限まで磨き上げた結果、**State（州大会）では見事に準優勝（2位）**という快挙を達成！ついに、世界中から選ばれしチームが集う「ワールド大会」への扉をこじ開けたのです。

次は世界。アイオワ州に集結する各国の代表たちへ

2026年5月。アメリカ全土、そして世界各国から代表チームがアイオワ州に集結します。 言葉も文化も異なる同世代の子供たちが、自分たちの知恵と創造力をぶつけ合う究極の舞台。

あの大寒波の日も、送迎の車内でも、自分たちの力を信じて進み続けたSuwanee Elementaryの子供たちが、今まさに世界という大きな舞台に立とうとしています。

「積み重ね」が未来を創る：世界大会へ挑む子どもたちへのエール

Angeは、日々の小さな積み重ね（Ritual）こそが、大きな成果を手にする唯一の道だと信じています。自らの手で未来を切り拓こうと、ひたむきに努力を続ける子どもたちの姿に、私たちは深く心を動かされました。

【中略：Odyssey of the Mind（オデッセイ・オブ・ザ・マインド）とは？】

初めてこの名前を聞く方へ。Odysseyとは、1978年に始まった国際的な**「クリエイティブ問題解決」**の競技会です。

• 何をするの？： 5つの異なる課題（機械製作、構造、古典、車両など）から1つを選び、8分間のパフォーマンスの中で解決策を提示します。

• 最大の特徴： 「100%子供たちだけで行うこと」。大人は一切のアドバイス、手出し、修理、衣装の作成を手伝うことができません。

• 評価の基準： 単に「正解」を出すのではなく、どれだけ「独創的（Creative）」で「ユニーク」な解決策を見せたかがスコアになります。

現在、世界約25カ国から数千チームが参加する、知のオリンピックとも呼ばれる大会です。日本からも出場します。
